COLORS FOR THE WALLS: INTRODUCTION
Choosing colors for the walls of the house is a serious commitment and not at all trivial, requires research and above all attention, because the decision is often influenced by personal taste, mood and trends of the moment.
Before colour exploded again even among decorative trends, as has happened in recent years, the most widely used shade was a single one, to be applied throughout the house. The choice fell between neutral tones, such as dove grey or a wide range of greys and beiges, reassuring, elegant and unpretentious colours. Vibrant palettes were often considered bold, as they could have tired or incorrectly altered the perception of space.
Here is a brief guide to consciously choose the most suitable shades for our home, according to everyone’s taste and personality.
MAIN COLOURS
Let’s analyze the main wall colors together.
- Grey: very popular in recent years as it is often associated with modern furniture. It gives the room a certain style and elegance. Using this color though, is not easy!
- White: it is considered the neutral colour par excellence, it gives space and brightness to the environment.
- Yellow: widely used in living rooms, kitchens and studies because it is a very bright colour, which stimulates concentration and socialization.
- Red: to be avoided in bedrooms, because it is a very lively color that transmits strength and energy. Suitable for transit spaces, such as the hallway or lobby.
- Blue: color that calms and relaxes. It is often used in bedrooms and bathrooms.
- Pink: color that is often used in rooms because it transmits a warm and sweet atmosphere. It is sometimes used in living rooms with a vintage style.
ATTENTION TO LIGHT
It often happens that you choose colours for your walls and discover that they are different once applied to the surface. This lack of response could certainly depend on the rendering of the colour itself but partly on the so-called metamerism, i.e. the shade that the colour takes on in relation to the light. Each pigment, in fact, is iridescent with respect to the source of light to which it is exposed, which is why it is always preferable to choose the color considering the context and conditions in which it will be applied, taking into account the exposure, the openings of the environment, palette in hand. Some tones are more sensitive to this phenomenon, especially shades tending towards light and on the grey scale.
A room in the North, with little exposure to the sun, receives a fairly limited amount of light, with a blue dominant, this means that these shades will be more intense, but tones tending towards anthracite grey risk to dull the environment a bit too much. It is therefore better to favour light and warm shades that enhance the lesser amount of light.
GENERAL ADVICE
It’s not easy to match colors for the walls of your home. There are some basic rules that should be considered. In this paragraph we explain the main ones.
One of the most common mistakes made by those who decide to furnish their homes independently is that of thinking about the choice of colours for the walls, without focusing on their distribution within the environment.
One of the basic principles to know is the “60-30-10” rule:
1. Decorate 60% of the room with the dominant colour
2. Decorate 30% of the room with the secondary color
3. Use the remaining color as an accent in 10% of the space.
When choosing colors for the walls, it is important that the hues belonging to the categories of cold, warm and neutral colors are balanced in a harmonious way.
As a general rule, it is important to balance the colours in such a way that the dominant colour is combined with no more than three different contrasting tones. Here are all the possibilities available to you.
You can decorate the room with a single color, but with a tone-on-tone approach you can also use different shades of the same color and get a consistent and lively color effect at the same time.
